Small sailing boats were used to move between the various islands of Bahrain until 1929. In the middle 1920's people docked the small boats in Gudhaibiya as the area from Gudhaibiya Palace to the edge of Um Al Hassam was used as summer cottages for the residents of Manama and Muharraq.

Terrestrial transport between towns and villages was on donkeys.

In 1929, work started on the causeway between Manama and Muharraq. The then-ruler, Shaikh Hamad bin Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa opened it in 1941, and scores of people, about 200 daily, used it to walk between Manama and Muharraq.

In 1923, the first plane, Hannibal, landed in Adliya near Radio Bahrain. Scores of people witnessed the "strange bird" which failed to take off later because of a small stream of water. It was only the next day that its pilot succeeded to fly it to the old Muharraq airport.

An aqua port was constructed in 1932 near the Omar Al Khayyam Hotel.
